Saint George's List-Serve
stg-general@lists.bnetmd.net
Purpose:
This list (stg-general@lists.bnetmd.net) exists as a forum for distributing issues
of interest to Saint George's Parish. After reading this message, please save
it for future reference. It contains helpful information about how to subscribe,
unsubscribe, and send various other commands to the list.
Recently, Fr Chris sent a message using the list-serve, announcing its existence
and providing this information. If you received that e-mail, then you are already
subscribed to the list. If you didn't, you are welcome to subscribe to the list
as discussed below.
Etiquette Guidelines:
To send a message to everyone on the list, simply address it to "stg-general@lists.bnetmd.net".
At the moment, stg-general is a fully open, unmoderated list, and will stay
that way as long as members are careful to abide by standard Internet etiquette.
Here is a short summary of the guidelines we should all try to follow:
- Be brief. Most members of this list are too busy to read long messages
and may prefer to press the "delete" key if your message is too long. With
this in mind, please do not copy a previous message in your reply unless the
message was posted at least a week earlier. Instead, take the time to write
a line or two explaining which message you are responding to.
- Be clear. Out of respect for the other people who will be reading your
message, take the time to proofread it at least once. Make sure your ideas
are clear, your grammar is correct, and silly spelling mistakes are corrected.
This requires you to spend a bit more time on your message, but it saves everyone
else time in trying to figure out what you're trying to say!
- Be polite. If you are offended by something somebody has written, it is
best to contact that person privately. If your personal attempts to resolve
the problem are unsuccessful, or if you are concerned about a certain person
or the tone of certain messages, contact the listowner. Do not "flame" the
person on the list.
- Reply conscientiously. The "reply" function is set to reply to the individual
who wrote the message rather than to the group. Use "reply all" to reply to
the whole group. But before doing the latter, always stop to consider whether
your message is really intended for everyone. When it becomes apparent that
a conversation is developing between only two or three persons, it should
be continued through private e-mail, with periodic summaries posted to the
list inviting others to join in. If "lurkers" are interested, they'll make
that clear by asking you to continue the conversation on the list.
- Avoid attachments. If you have an attachment that you think some people
may want, there are two options. First, request people contact you individually
for the attachment. Otherwise, forward the attachment to Todd
Lutton. He will rapidly load the attachment on the church server, and
return a link (url) you can include in your e-mail. People reading the e-mail
will be able to download the file at their leisure.
